Storm Closure Policy

Storm Closure & Delay Policy

At the Down East Family YMCA, the safety of our members, staff, and families is our top priority. We also recognize that many in our community rely on our programs—especially childcare—during winter storms. The guidelines below explain how and when we make decisions about delays and closures.

Overnight & Early Morning Storms

We do our best to announce any changes by 5:00 PM the night before.

If conditions change overnight, we will make a final decision by 4:30 AM.

  • If storms finish in time for us to clean up and make our parking areas and entrances clear and safe, we will open each facility at it’s regularly scheduled time.
  • If we plan on a delay, we will aim to open facilities by 8:00 AM whenever possible.
  • During delayed openings:
    • Childcare may open on a modified schedule (updates will be posted).
    • All other programs (fitness classes, aquatics, etc.) will begin at 12:00 PM.

Storms Developing During the Day

We will make decisions about:

  • Afternoon programs (anything after 2:30 PM), and
  • Any early closures

by 1:00 PM.

How We Communicate Storm Updates

When delays or closures occur, we will post updates in the following places:

  • Down East Family YMCA Facebook pages
  • Our website
  • Member emails (emails must be up to date)

Program-specific updates (for swim team, youth sports, etc.) will be communicated directly by program staff via their normal channels (email, text alerts, or team pages).

Which Facilities Are Included?

This storm policy applies to all Down East Family YMCA facilities except the Bucksport YMCA, which follows RSU 25’s weather-related decisions.
