January 2022 Membership Updates

As we enter into a new year, the Down East Family YMCA is ready to shake off the wild ride of 2021 and look towards 2022 with optimism and hope. Here is an overview of some exciting changes happening and being planned for 2022.

Blue Hill YMCA, Lawrence Center expansion underway:

Gymnasium construction is starting with the steel frame being erected and the project moving forward. The Lawrence’s commitment to this expansion is a wonderful gift to the Blue Hill peninsula and will be ready for use later in 2022. The gym will offer diverse programming opportunities for all ages and we are excited about its potential. The Lawrence Family has also purchased a golf simulator which will be housed in the fitness studio until the new space(s) are ready. Golf simulators can be a great tool during all times of the year to maintain and improve a golfer’s ability, consistency, and skill. People will be able to swing their clubs even with a foot of snow on the ground. We are excited to be able to offer youth programs and schedule foursomes soon.

Ellsworth YMCA, Wiggins Center changes:

Thanks to the generosity of our friends at Darling’s Chevrolet, the Wiggins Center has added new program areas to enjoy. We have renovated and dedicated one room for new HydroMassage® chairs. Hydromassage has been shown to be safe for everyone and a great health benefit for sore muscles after a workout, as a modality to increase circulation and as part of a self-care routine. The therapeutic benefits of these chairs are consistent with our mission for total health. We have also renovated a second space for a Golf Simulation Center with the same equipment being installed in Blue Hill. Ellsworth and Blue Hill YMCA’s will be able to offer indoor tournaments, golf lessons for all ages, and the opportunity to work on skills and have fun! Finally, plans are underway to renovate our weight room spaces in the spring of 2022. Stay tuned for exciting news soon.

Upcoming recreational opportunities: To better serve the people and families in Bucksport, Blue Hill, and Ellsworth, the staff team is developing some fun recreational opportunities. Expanded pickleball options, cornhole, and water polo are being planned. Keep an eye on our program guides for updates. Program guides can be found in the lobbies of our branches or online at defymca.org/programguide

Like other businesses we are being challenged with increased costs for personnel, equipment, and utilities, The Y has increased membership and some program fees. Membership fees for current members will increase on February 1st. We work hard at keeping our rates affordable and offer The Membership For All program for those that need membership and program assistance. Assistance is based on a sliding scale based on household income. Membership information can be found at defymca.org/rates

I want to thank everyone for being part of The Y and I wish a successful, healthy, and hopefully normal 2022 to all.

Sincerely,

Peter D. Farragher
