Fred’s Story

Fred's Story

Fred and Leslie

Fred and his wife Leslie joined The Down East Family YMCA when they first moved to the area in 2013. Moving to a new area and being retired, Fred knew that by joining The Y, he’d meet people.

Fred and Leslie take part in the Active Older Adult class on Tuesdays and Thursdays and lift weights and use the treadmill on other days of the week. Coming to The Y for regular exercise is a big part of Fred’s week not only for the physical benefits but for the social aspect as well.

When The Y shut down last spring, Fred and Leslie decided they couldn’t let the fitness they’d built slip so they set up a circuit at home and committed to walking ten miles a week.

When Fred was able to come back, he was most excited to see his Y friends and get back to his physical and social routine.

He points out that today we are wearing funny masks and that his weight lifting is spread out over several rooms. He and his wife, Leslie, recently were discussing their move to Ellsworth and the decision to join The Y right away. They realized that had they moved now in 2020, they are confident that even though other social and religious activities are not normal, The Y is the place they would be able to count on for their physical, social, and emotional wellbeing and for that, they are thankful.
