Blue Hill YMCA to offer Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Class

Earn your lifeguard certification by April 18th!

The Blue Hill YMCA will offer a Red Cross Lifeguard Certification class starting February 29th. At the end of this program, participants must complete certification assessments as required by the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Program.

The class will include 7 – 8 sessions at the pool, Thursdays from 5:30 – 8:00pm and online lessons that must be completed on your time.

All participants must complete the required swimming skills prerequisite prior to taking and completing the final skills assessment.

Before taking the American Red Cross Lifeguard Test at the completion of the course, participations must demonstrate the ability to do the following.

Swimming Pool Guards:

  • Swim tread swim, 150yards (front crawl or breaststroke)
  • Tread water with your head above the surface without hands for 2 minutes followed by a 50 yards swim
  • Retrieve a 10lb brick from the bottom of the pool in approximately 9 feet of water and return it to the shallow end of the pool in under 1:40 seconds

Waterfront Guards:

  • Swim tread swim, 350yards
  • Tread water with your head above the surface without hands for 2 minutes followed by a 200 yards swim
  • Retrieve a 10lb brick from the bottom of the pool in approximately 9 feet of water and return it to the shallow end of the pool in under 1:40 seconds
  • 5 yard underwater swim collecting 3 dive rings, surface, swim another 5 yards

Members: $250.
Non-members: $350
Applicants for YMCA lifeguard positions: FREE
