84 Turn Out for “Dare to Tri” Triathlon

ELLSWORTH — With 32 individual competitors and 18 two- or three-person teams, Saturday’s fourth annual “Dare to Tri” Sprint Triathlon was, by all accounts, a major success.

“It was a great event,” said Peter Farragher, executive director of the James Russell Wiggins Down East Family YMCA, which organized the triathlon.

“It was an awful lot of fun,” said Farragher. “Everyone was just having a ball.”

In the individual competition, Doug Shattuck, 50, of Mount Desert was the overall winner with a combined time of 74 minutes and 41 seconds for the 525-yard swim, 13.4-mile bike ride and 3.1 mile run.

Runner-up was Benjamin Avery, 20, of Blue Hill in 75:56.

Other top individual finishers, by age group, were:

  • Kim Parrott, 44, of Blue Hill, first 40-49 female in 80:58.
  • Jacques Tardie, 24, of Ellsworth, first 20-29 male in 81:41.
  • Chip Loring, 64, of Old Town, first 60-69 male in 82:22.
  • Shawn McKay, 41, of Blue Hill, first 40-49 male in 82:52.
  • Kurt Lietz, 62, of Sedgwick, second 60-69 male in 83:52.
  • Maegan Haney, 35, of Mount Desert, first 30-39 female in 85:24.
  • Chris Perry, 27, of Cherryfield, second 20-29 male in 85:31.
  • Hayley Gommel, 20, of Ellsworth, first 20-29 female in 88:11.
  • Charlotte Clews, 37, of Blue Hill, second 30-39 female in 92:44.
  • Suzanne Loiselle, 41, of New York, second 40-49 female in 95:13.
  • Bobb Nicholas, 13, of Naperville, first 11-19 male in 97:18.
  • Debra Shissler, 57, of Cherryfield, first 50-59 female in 102:23.

In the team competition,

  • Team C.C. H. (Lainey Cohen, 17, of Ellsworth; Steve Connor, 39, of Dedham; Derek Hawes, 17, of Ellsworth) placed first overall in 59:56.
  • Second overall was the DEFY Dream Team (Maks Grover, 17, Marc Dupuy, 37, and Dan Curts, 17, all of Ellsworth) in 60:50.
  • Team Cadillac (Jessica Naylor, 35, of Ellsworth; May Jackson, 26; Mia Dupuy, 28, of Ellsworth) was the first female team in 86:58.
  • Team Iron Man (Mallory Nightingale, 17, Jamie Ford, 17, and Aleta Looker, 14, all of Ellsworth) was the second female team in 88:31.
  • Team Holmes (Cooper Holmes, 14, Erick Holmes, 44 and Kody Holmes, 17, all of Ellsworth) was the first male team in 73:41.
  • Team Flash (Sam Alvarado, 12, of Ellsworth; Claude Dupuy, 62, of Blue Hill; Jack Burnett, 58, of Ellsworth) was the second male team in 73:57.
